I went out last night to a very small venue and saw Matt Mays play a solo acoustic set. I don't know if anyone else has ever heard of him but he gets pretty good air time on most of the radio statios around here. He was good. That would be the fourth live show I have ever been to and it is hard to compare shows and what was better or worst as the other shows were Def Leppard(large arena), Tim MacGraw(same large arena), and 7M3 last year. Don't sh*t on me for MacGraw, I was trying to impress my girlfriend on Valentine's Day and it must have worked because we have been married for 11 years now!
Anyway Matt Mays was alright.

Get out the pocketbook for Mr Waters. Nosebleed $99.00 each. Scalpers selling $199. tickets for $1300. each. Concert costs are out of control for some things. KISS meet and greet $1500.!

Country Jam locally this weekend headlined by Montgomery Gentry. They chose KISS's "Rock n Roll All Night" for encore. Between Little Big Town and next act, Chickenfoot was on sound system. I dislike possibly intoxicated unreasonable cowboys and cowgirls. Twelve sinks in a row in bathroom, 11 filled with the inexperienced drinker's refuse. Pittsburgh has officially been transformed to "Country-Rock" status. Country first. I just read an article suggesting Pittsburgh "rock" scene is one of the best. Don't seem that way two me.

Peter Wolf of J Geils Band performed recently to an almost empty building. Sad.

I recently read that for a band to accept an opportunity to play a festival. they must sign a non-compete contract. They cannot book in a certain established radius determined by market considerations for a set amount of time. It could be devastating to book into a festival for some bands as the loss may far outweigh the gains. The article singled out an LA based band who would give up LA appearances for three months. Their strongest city. Exposure to more people or loss of revenues. Career gambling!

I've heard about that, but usually in the opposite "direction". A band will have their own show somewhere, so therefore can't be announced or advertised as being at a later festival show until after their first show is complete. Otherwise many would skip the first one and see them at the festival. I certainly understand that, from the promoter's perspective.

I haven't seen it much the other way, but it could keep some bands from signing up (early) for a festival show.

That makes sense Jaws. It would suck to have dates booked prior to festival with no advertising as well.

Bonnaroo is doing some Youtube broadcasts from festival. I'll be tuning in even though most of these type "broadcasts" are a letdown in some ways,June 11th-13th.

Just got back from Red Rocks. I saw Big Head Todd & his Monsters. What a fabulous show. It was the 20th anniversary of "Midnight Radio" they played it in it's entirety and are going to be offering a free download of the Midnight Radio set. They drove their original 1977 tour van on the stage and climbed out of it. Todd said it has 250 thousand miles on it and has been sitting in their drummers back yard for the last ten years. The place went nuts!!
This only makes 2 times I have ever seen a band play an entire CD in order. I loved it.

Very cool KFC. I'm a fan of playing an album all the way through live. Wish I still had my 77 van. Aerosmiths "Toys In The Attic" and Roger Waters "Dark Side Of The Moon" were incredible. Good to hear from you.

WDVE is the staple rock station in Pittsburgh. 2 days ago they were really bashing Tom Petty's most recent show. Apparently he opened with 5 new songs in a row. According to them, the crowd was pissed. It's not like the show was sold with a pre established setlist. The real fan was probably stoked to hear the new music. I don't care and can't wait for DBT'ers and TP!

So tonight was a classic rock flashback.

Kansas- Stole the show in broad daylight. I saw these guy's 7-8 years ago at Washington Pa Rib fest. Tonight was way better and if you ever listened to Kansas greatest hits album ,you know the setlist. Whats on My Mind Stood out to me. I would call the set musically sound after all these years. Huge ovation at set end.

Foreigner- One original member left Mick Jones. He really is cool going between his Les Paul and keyboards. The backing band was great. I always enjoyed the sax on their recordings as well as live. Star Rider and Dirty White Boy was cool to hear. Some overhauling to the line-up but they were pretty tight. I liked Jason Bonham on drums but he wanted Zeppelin reunion to happen more than keeping this gig.

Styx- Lorelie and Suite Madam Blue made this a show for me. Otherwise as much as I like this band(First time I saw was 1977)They really need to change up show and songs. Keyboard player has identical comments ,mannerisms, and music every time. James Young is still fun to watch and personable with crowd. Tommy Shaw is the crowd favorite. He played a Damn Yankees song and I enjoyed that. They threw more picks, beach balls, and frisbees than I've ever seen. I got none. Other than the three mentioned songs, setlist was very predictable.

All in all this is a cheap show to attend and a great ride down classic rock lane. At these type shows everybody young or old seems to know every song. I might be slightly disappointed if Kansas weren't there. Long live rock n roll!

38 Special sounded pretty good and drew a respectable response for a first act. 50 minutes of hits, some I had forgotten. A few from sound tracks(Take Me back to Paradise). It had been many moons since I saw these guy's and I was pleased.

Brett Michaels Band was , well , made for VH-1. Poison cover band with the original lead singer? Get on the Poison tour and stay there. Very predictable and VH1 was taping. Strippers are so predictable and they were on high alert for this set. My bottom line, could have lived without this.

Lynryd Skynyrd was cool as usual. I Was on stage in Myrtle Beach in 2002 and loved it. Setlist was as expected and very predictable. Stage show was scaled back from previous years. Some of the fans at Skynyrd simply come for the fight as much as music. Witnessed a 6'6" dude punch a 5'6" woman in the face. I always thought "Freebird" may be the best closing song ever. Always leave them wanting more!I really enjoyed the show but believe I'm done with the never ending Skynyrd band. Scored a pick!

Tom Petty- Stellar performance again! Simplified stage show from last appearance. Seemingly less subs and other speakers but no loss in sound. They(Petty and Mike Campbell primarily)had the room and worked the stage more with all the "Openness". Great set with a couple new songs. No frills just a well delivered set of music. TP really made a lot of eye contact and was throwing tons of smiles and facial expressions. Maybe more personable than ever. Possibly intoxicated woman doused me with beer for claiming rightful seat. So much for peace.

Drive By Truckers- Well I saw them before at "Volunteer Jam" and really wanted to see them again to keep opinion open. Some of you won't like whats coming so walk away or man up. I was totally un impressed. Tone was absolutely monotonous and the only variation in tone was vocal. Did nothing a "warm up" band should do. This was nearly sold out if not. Talk to them, work em a little and next time you are at MR Smalls more people than last will come. Apparently this band is on auto pilot and has enough core fans not to seem like they care. I saw one guy in a DBT T-shirt and he was apparently their, Fan. They stayed all balled up in the middle of this huge stage never leaving position like a Buckingham Palace Guard. I will continue to listen to them but I was dissappointed the first live show as well as the second. In their defense, I do believe I would enjoy them more in a smaller venue. But all in all last night all they did was what drew a check. Boring and that was the crowds general perception. No response what so ever as they departed stage. Maybe they sensed the crowd was "Just Not Into You" and that's what I felt. I would have used time with Petty a little wiser, somehow.

Good news for the Pink Floyd fans. Recently a glimmer of hope was shed. David Gilmour was joined on stage by Roger Waters. They did about four songs and Gilmour said he would appear on stage with Waters during his tour. Hope you get this treat at your venue and at the least we can hope for the future.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Tonight KISS kicked my ass! Great theatrics and Pyro as well as a phenominal stage. All this set to the lyrics about getting laid! Ace's replacement should give up singing "Shock Me" and stick to instrument. Gene is hard to watch long periods cause he's to into character and spitting like crazy. Drummer was very good, Paul Stanley works the crowd like a 35 year vet. After "Beth" Paul was in flight from the stage to the mixing console. This was over at 11:30 and I never saw a Pittsburgh large venue show go so far past "curfew". I first saw them in 1977 and still possess ticket and a picture. It was an adventure in 77 and one need only watch "Detroit Rock City" and we were close without the strip club and getting paid for sex! "Role Models" is a cool KISS influenced movie. 1977-2010 = 33 years of Kiss!

Openers were a local band who won Guitar Center contest. Then The Envy and The Academy Is. I liked both but only knew the covers. One guy told me these bands are buddies with Gene's son.

In Pittsburgh Billy's Pumpkins sold out to quick for me. Would to have liked to have seen. I read Billy passed out on stage in Fla.

Next stop for me will be Heart at Station Square! Barracuda! Sad for me in a way as memories stir. The first time in my life in the front row ever was Heart "Dog And Butterfly" tour. My buddy Jimmy was lucky enough to own this cool Triumph and we had fun from the time we left till the time we got home. He was older and planning at that point to go to FLA to get a job and come back for his girlfriend once established. He did his part and was heart broken when his girlfriend had "moved on". Pretty much with out hesitation he took his own life with a gun. Teary eyed and seeking tequila. Sorry

I ended up seeing Train and John Mayer last night. What a pairing first of all. What I found different was you really couldn't distinguish a difference between main "fanbase". Most were female and forgive me but quite preppy. Well dressed educated possibly. Train is quite ear candy and really a perfect lead in. Crowd was very interested and lead singer came into the well behaved people. Mayer is kinda like taking a little trip. I love his guitar playing and the place blew up for "Gravity". Huge screen the width of the stage with a combination of clips and live footage. I knew even more tunes than I realized. I enjoyed seeing them and the pairing seemed perfect.

Heart was wonderful. A very mellow Pitt crowd except one adult beverage expert. Apparently he forgot where the pie whole was and opted to wear it. All over his face and shirt was... food. Enough about him, Ann and Nancy were backed by a pretty cool group. Female keyboard player(something Cher)made cool music. Flute(Ann)and guest fiddler added to the array of sounds. Outstanding vocals! Really nice guitar tones especially on Zep songs and Barracuda. Some song mashing and covers included Zep and the Who. For the record, Gretchen Wilson covers Heart better than anyone and Heart does the best Zeppelin!
The main problem and same problem seen over and over again, no interest in new music. Crowd jumped and screamed for "Straight On" then snoozed through "Red Velvet Car". A new song that kinda pays tribute to those crazy nights we can't get home or make it any longer. The great friend swoops in and picks you up in the "Red Velvet Car". Hell I hallucinated something like that in 70's. I said Jimmy's name out load several times so he could be there in memory if not spirit.

I tested a new gadget tonight. Blue Microphone makes a mic for Ipod. It's called a Mikey and generation 2 has stereo line in. In brief listen I'm impressed with this mic and it's so easy to use. Plug it onto Ipod>open voice recorder>start recording. Cool apps available for Itouch as well.

Well one week after the Cinci singing controversy, STP rolled into Pittsburgh. The review from paper below is not favorable. I would love to say something favorable to offset the review, but I struggle. Somethings wrong? The band played good and guitar tones bass and drums were more than good. Scott seems to be having some type troubles in the mix or his voice but you could hardly hear him at first. I wonder if the sound company was poorly representing the band. Anyway you clean it up, the sound was off somewhere. Setlist was great for me. I hope Weiland is clean.

While Cage The Elephant took a while to capture the crowd they succeeded in later half of set. Singer crowd surfs and jumps barriers for fun. I went in knowing 2 songs with an open mind. I'm curious enough to say after I'm done here I'll check them out further.

On a sad note, I learned today Tuesday's Kings Of Leon show is cancelled. And bird poo has nothing to do with it!

Hey Fitz! Yeah my buddy and I will be there Sunday night! I am flying up to Pittsburgh tomorrow morning. Very excited.

I'll definitely look for you. I will be in Section 104 as well, Row H Seats 24 & 25.

This will be interesting... no good camera and no recording equipment. The concert might actually be dull without so much to do!

I'll watch for you! Safe travels. The visual stimulation will have to do. He's very strict. This was blaring through my high school walls as a junior. Me and a buddy skipped one class all year! Tucked up under a highway bridge and listening to 8-tracks. Every day we colored around another brick and after sometime created our own wall. The "I failed Spanish" wall!

Roger Waters was great! Good to see Danny at a non 7m3 show and hope you enjoyed! My buddy who has a Pink Floyd/Led Zeppelin cover band was in a skydiving accident 2 weeks after first show. Here he is on his Les Paul,as Jimmy Page.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LaeNKbc_ShQ

He had fun getting out and we enjoyed getting and seeing him there.

Roger Waters is a perfectionist and it must take one to put on such a production. 27 Semi trailers, semi trailers, semi trailers wtf? The wall was cardboard this time around. You know the songs and I think I liked Mother best as he sang along with a video from a 1980 show. The backing band was fantastic and the only thing even slightly different was the vocalist who sang Gilmour parts. He was good but not as good as Gilmour. The rafters were concealing at least a dozen well used projectors. This is way more than a rock show and more like a play with vivid visuals and awesome tones. Surround sound was awesome. The Pig flies again! I was skeptical about paying the price for this massive production but very happy I did. Gilmour is gonna make an appearance at one of these shows soon, he promised. Wish it had been tonight. Go see!

I almost forgot but this is the first show I ever attended that had signs declaring no cell phone usage. Signs did not work.

that band really embodies so many of the same characteristics that I go to see live 7m3 shows for- no BS, in your face, great rock.

sigh. Wayne, Val & I "heard" them at the HoBsucks in Chicago. Balcony tickets suck. Floor was sold out. They sounded great though, would love to actually see them someday. I think I'm a little spoiled with front row access

Roger Waters was, as expected, amazing. I do not attend a lot of big stadium shows as I just don't feel the value is there to be sitting 100 feet away from 4 guys on a stage...

However, this was something totally different. A 242 foot wide and 35 foot tall wall with amazing (AMAZING) high definition digital projection. This was an experience beyond a band playing a selection of "hits" and more like a mix between a rock concert and a Broadway show.

I took some pictures from my seats (which were quite good) and a whole bunch of video, all on the iPhone. I'm going to try to mix the photos and video into something at a later point, when I have "free time" but hopefully it will be good.

There's some decent bootlegs of the tour from Chicago and Toronto out there already. If you are interested check out this stuff:
